Fei suffers from Disassociate Identity Disorder: Multiple personalities. Throughout the game, a mysterious character that calls himself "Id" appears and wreaks havoc on anything and anyone within close proximity.
"Id", is infact Fei. Id, is actually a Freudian term for the unconcious part of the mind that "Wants" and posses all the primal urges (aka anger and sex). The Id will seek to gratify itself, without concern for anything outside of itself.
During Xenogears, though you do not know it until later, Id will appear whenever Fei is under great emotional stress. (For example, when Timothy is shot right if front of him in Lahan Village.) I did notice that Id is usually triggered whenever Fei witnesses someone being injured severely or killed, this is more than likely because of what happens in his past. (That will explained shortly.) When Id appears, Fei is not longer "Fei", he becomes something of a monster, an extremely powerful force to be reckoned with, one that does not show pity and wishes to destroy everything and everyone.
As just mentoined, Id is extremely powerful and will send your characters "packing" several times throughout the game. Herecieved all of his power from the Zohar millenia's ago ("The Contact" inherited Deus's "Power".) , thus if Id knew how to use it correctly, he could have unlimited power, coupled with his extreme anger, this making him extremely dangerous, and very much able to "Destroy the World", in literal terms.
Id came to be when Fei was still a child. He lived with his father Kahn, and mother, Karen. Kahn worked under Shevat, and was away on business quite often, during this time, Fei was alone with his mother. He lead a happy life for a few short years, then suddenly, that happiness was shattered. Karen's behavior suddenly changed, she was no longer the kind and gentle mother she had previously been. Karen began taking young Fei to secret laboratories, where he underwent strange, and painful experiments. Karen had become Miang. (When Miang's body dies, her conciousness lives on and inhabits another woman who takes her place, Karen was one of these unfortunate women.)
Fei attempts to tell his father what is happening, but Kahn is too preoccupied with his business in Shevat and he writes it all off to childish fantasies. The experiments continue while Kahn is gone, and Fei's young mind isn't able to deal with the carnage and pain anymore. He creates a seperate persona, "Id", to protect himself. "Id" takes in all of Fei's pain and suffering, this is Fei's mind attempt to salvage itself and keep it's happy memories.
Finally, Kahn notices Karen's strange change in behavior, however, it is too late for the mentally scarred Fei. Soon after, Graf, more than likely finding out that the "contact" has manifested itself once again from Miang, comes to claim the young Fei. Kahn will attempt to protect Fei, while Karen just stands back and watches Kahn loose, badly. Fei can no longer stand to deal with what he is witnessing and snaps, releasing a ball of ether energy at Graf and his father. (It presumably killed Graf and severly injured Kahn.) The ball of energy then slingshots back toward Fei, who cannot yet control such power, and would be killed if it connected. At this time, the screen focuses on Karen, who looks sadly at Fei and jumps in front of Fei, to shield him and save his life. Karen gives him one last look, a kind and loving gaze, and slumps over Fei, dead.
The one on "Center Stage"
|
The Fei we know in the game. He's the one who exists when Fei is calm and in control.
The "Coward"
|
Usually seen and portrayed as "Young Fei", back before his mother changed. He possess all of Fei's happy childhood memories for himself.
The Id was created when Fei's mother began her experiments on him. The pain and trauma he suffered caused a split in Fei's subconscious. The "Coward" kept all of the happy memories, while the "Id" got whatever was left over. All of the pain and suffering he was forced to endure was pushed into the "Id".
The persona is only viewed during a brief part of the game. When Fei is in carbonite freeze, this persona stands on center stage, while Fei's other three persona's converse. Id is seen walking off with this persona, and that is the time when Fei's body escapes the carbonite freeze and disappears.
According to Freud, we all possess an "Id", it contains our primal wants and desires. Fei is the "Contact", the one who came into contact with the Zohar and recieved a sliver of it's power, he possess extreme ether energy, mental strength, and physical strength. Because he has a strong mind, and the Zohar's power behind him, Fei's Id is also very powerful. Most of Fei's strength lies dormant, however, once Fei is "set off", he looses control and Id, who possesses all of this ether/physical power, manifests itself. Since Id wants nothing more than to destroy everything, the power he unleashes is un-imaginable. (Whenever Id is challenged by a character in the game, that character looses....BADLY)
Fei will eventually work out his mental problems on his own, and the four persona's will become one complete being.
