Five hundred years before Xenogears opens up in Lahan Village, a conflict between Nisan and Solaris began. Nisan's religious leader, Mother Sophia, had such an impact on people that she gained quite a following, enough to warrant Solaris's full attention. Afraid of an uprising, they began a military campaign against Nisan.
Lacan was a gentle and quiet young man who painted for a living. As children, he and Sophia met while she was being treated for sickness at a clinic in his town. (He once described her as being sickly.)
The two formed a close friendship. He would also become one of her followers and personal guards later.
Lacan was later hired to paint Sophia's portrait. This will become the one and only actual image of Sophia that survives the era, and the Nisan Sect. will keep in locked in a special room, where only certain members of the convent may see it.
While painting the portrait, Lacan, then in love with
Sophia but afraid to say it, enjoys the extra amount of time he can spend alone with her. He will later find out that Sophia didn't like the idea of having her portrait done until she heard Lacan would be the one doing it. But since he is an extreme pessemist, he refuses to believe that someone as good as her could possibly have feelings for him.
Soon, the uprising and battles between Solaris start, and Lacan tells Roni Fatima (Bart's ancestor), that he shouldn't be painting her under these conditions.
Shevat's council makes a deal with Solaris. They give Shevat their aggressor, Miang, and in return they hand over Sophia, the leader of the rebel army. I'm not sure if Zephyr knew of this plan or not, either way she either feels guilty and participates or has no knowledge of the councils plan.
Soon, the final battle between Nisan and Solaris begins, Nisan is surrounded, Roni, Lacan, Krelian, and Zephyr are all surround and about to die, when Nisan's flagship carrying Sophia appears. Sophia says her final words to Lacan ("Live!") and Krelian, and smashes the ship in their flagship, ending the battle, and killing her.
Upon witnessing his loves death, Lacan looses it. He says the "I will live, until the end of the world. And if the world does not end, I will end it myself!" He soon becomes the first incarnation of Graf, the seeker of power.
