The Urobolus

Ouroboros is the Gnostic symbol of a snake swallowing its own tail. It represents the constant motion and return to the beginning of the life cycle. It is not only an image of the wheel of life, but the shedding of serpent’s skin is symbolic of renewal and rebirth. source.

The phrase used in the beginning of the game hints at this. "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last..." This is actually a verse taken from somewhere in the Christian Bible. (I remember reading it somewhere, but I can't remember where) In Xenogears, it could refer to so many things, Ouroboros, Elhaym and Fei's plot, Miang, etc.

Urobolus, or Ouroboros, is what binds Miang to all females that contain her DNA, which is probably every female on the planet since all humans are descended from her.

When you think about it more, Urobolus can also symbolise Fei and Elhaym's whole story. During the conflict inside his consciousness, Fei will have flashbacks of some of his previous lives. In each one, you will notice that Elhaym dies trying to protect Fei. She always pleads the word "Live!" to him, and from what I can conclude by the scenes where escape isn't really possible, Fei dies soon after. It never actually shows Fei being killed though.

Elhaym and Fei are continually reborn into new bodies, Elhaym sometimes has different hair colors, but for the most part, looks the same, and her name is always Elhaym. Fei always looks the way he normally does, but his name is always different. These two are caught in a tragic loop that they apparently, can never escape. Fei just happened to come into contact with Zohar which saved him from dying on the Eldridge, Zohar caused Fei to be "special", since he now possessed it's power. This "power" allowed his spirit to continue on after his physical death, by being born over and over again. Elhaym was created from the original Mother, a peice of Miang, she was created as a companion for Fei, from his desire for his mother.
